| This is flat, has a portage, a series of nice class III/III+
rapids, then is relatively flat. It is best run immediately after or during rain. Such as it was when we put on
at 4:10 pm. The water was rising at 2.3'. We were loading boats at 5:36 pm but we did not dawdle. When you get
to the action, the first rapid, Pall Mall Falls, is almost always a portage. PMF is IV+ without the trees. After
that, you have some beefy III+ if you have enough water. Then you pay the price in flatwater, which is much more
bearable the more water you have on hand. A fun short run, but make sure you have enough water! The only person I know for sure that has run PMF is Jeremy Adkins. Many hours work went in clearing the drop of logs. Then it was a wait for the perfect level. Safety is a must here. The whole run is not really recommended since it is now full of log jams again and the land owner are very private people. There are two ways to judge levels. If the Locust is high, that is good. In a good water year, check the Inland Lake level. If it is over full pool, it may be spilling enough to do the run, maybe for many days in a row. See trip reports. |
